Many children have been welcomed into Grandfather Home in Banner Elk since it began almost 100 years ago in 1914. Rev. Edgar Tufts wanted to provide the local mountain children an orphanage home on the farm next door to Lees-McRae the school he also founded. He converted a farmhouse on the property into the first home for orphaned children in the area. By August 1915, the home had acquired 16 children.
"Build it and they will come", that’s exactly what the Town of Beech Mountain and Beech Mountain Ski Resort did, as last weekend Beech hosted the second annual USA Cycling Mountain Bike Gravity National Championships. Beech Mountain now holds the honor of being the only location in the South that hosts the event.
