Dave and Sherry Garris like many other residents of the High Country felt the impact of the building slowdown as both were involved with housing.

Sherry owns Sherry Garris Properties on Beech Mountain, as a licensed real-estate broker she commented that sales have been very slow on everything but rental properties.

Dave an accomplished builder in the area also has been hard hit during the recession. His business was built around custom homes like this home in Mtn Glenn, Golf Course.

However;  like many other entrepreneurs, Dave decided not to let the economy dictate his lively hood and chose to begin building kit airplanes.

Dave a licensed pilot has had a love for aviation from a young age. When his business slowed , to occupy his time he decided to order an airplane kit and build his own plane.

That now has turned into another profession for Dave as word got out around the airports , orders began to roll in for planes.

Currently Dave has built 4 planes that have owners from California to Florida and has more orders to fill.

He uses his home for construction. All the planes he builds can fit on a standard size low boy trailer , as wings easily are disassembled for transport to a nearby airport.

There he will test fly the aircraft per FAA regulations, and the owner will fly in to pick them up , or Dave will fly them to the owner.
